About the Blog

“Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness
well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”
- Pema Chödrön (The Places That Scare You: A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times)

I am Danielle Stimpson, and I am a Reiki Master, Shaman, Intuitive, Reflexologist, Gem & Crystal Healer, IET Practitioner and Recovering Anorexic. That’s right-just like the late-night infomercial, I’m also a client. I began healing my Eating Disorder in 2002 with the help of Psychiatry and Psychology, and I began studying Reiki in 2005.  If your mouth just started watering at the thought of lambasting Western Medicine in favor of what are often termed “Alternative Therapies”,  I apologize in advance for your disappointment in this blog.

In my roles as student, client, and practitioner of the healing arts; I’ve seen some some amazing things.  People taking charge of their own wellbeing, noticing the interconnectedness of all the things around them and in the Universe, and even “spontaneous” and total healing of things that had no scientific base whatsoever, things that were seen as untreatable.  I have been able to experience healing practices that many have never even heard of, some thousands of years old, some younger than myself.  Each one just as awesome as the last.

I’ve also been dismayed and even disturbed by some things that I have seen when Practitioners forget that we are all, on some level, a suffering being in need of healing.  As healers, it can be easy to separate ourselves from our own personal darkness, the things we heal within ourselves.  It can be challenging to recognize one’s own need for healing while supporting the healing of others.  It is also none too easy to remove the blinders of experience and replace them with the binoculars of possibility, to step away from what is comfortable and accept what may work for someone else, if not ourselves.   Even harder-we may come to know that our chosen practice, while of paramount importance in our own healing, may simply not be the best medicine for someone else.  There is no map to healing, no path “best” traveled, and no progress to be invalidated by how it was made.  We are no different from our clients-we have as much to learn from them as they do from us.  One’s sacred path of healing is to be respected and honored at every turn, and at any speed.

I’m not suggesting we all run out and tell our clients our most intimate details or wear our suffering on our sleeve.  We just can’t forget or ignore our own demons while attempting to help others deal with theirs. To do so often prevents the opportunity to empower our clients.  Occasionally, it results in an inappropriate power balance between the Practitioner and the Client-one based on perceived need and inner lacking that is often counterproductive to the healing process and, at it’s worst, may block it entirely.  We must pick our egos, wounds, scars and fears up and out of our client’s way if we are to be able to help them…or help ourselves.

This blog is not about pointing out the shortcomings of healers, lightworkers, etc.  It is about embracing other methods, ideas, and experiences besides our own.  It is about challenging ourselves to dig deeper, try something new, and grow as healers.  It is about seeing our “faults” as opportunities for improvement, our frailties as potential sources of strength.

It is about the Human Experience with all of it’s desperate struggles, unimaginable suffering and awe inspiring wonderment.

Thank you for reading.
